Norton Personal Firewall (Norton Internet Security) Configuration Notes

Norton Internet Security (NIS) is an application suite that contains Norton Personal Firewall (NPF). NPF is also available as a stand-alone installer. If you are using NPF (or NIS with NPF), there are a few configuration settings you must modify before you run your tracker on port 6969.

By default, NPF blocks port 6969 for all applications using 2 Trojan Horse Rules. Even if you have properly configured your firewall to allow BNBT.EXE access on port 6969, the Trojan Horse Rules will override these settings. You must therefore disable these 2 Trojan Horse Rules.

PLEASE NOTE: The following screen shots are from a full NIS 2003 installation.

  1. Double-click the NPF/NIS icon     in your system tray (AKA Notification Area).
  2. The Norton Internet Security window should open.

  3. Select Personal Firewall.
  4. Click the Configure button.
  5. Click the Trojan Horse Rules button found on the Advanced tab.
  6. Scroll down (very near to the bottom) to the Default Block rules for the following Trojan Horses:
    • GateCrasher Trojan Horse
    • Priority Trojan Horse
  7. Uncheck the boxes as shown below for these 2 rules.
  8. Press the OK button to save changes.
  9. Press the OK button to save changes.
  10. Close the Norton Internet Security window.
